Only thing we considered is to add a new difficulty mode called "hardcore mode". I have the coding for it done more or less but it would not replace any existing mode but would just be new one.

We are not done with it and were just brainstorming in the past so consider everything I write as pre-alpha. None of this might make it to the server or in a completely different way:

Cons:
- 500% Shard Costs to respawn (Shard Cost even for regular respawns)
- 500% Gold to respawn
- HC characters can only equip items that dropped for an HC character.
You can convert non HC items to HC items for a high price.
- Banked XP / Shard XP penalty: 80%
- No using shards to advance the story

Pros:
- Small Spell DC bonus
- +6 Attribute Points
- +20% Magic Find

Sounds like the design intent is high risk/high reward.

Will look forward to seeing how it pans out.

Edit: Could we rename Easy mode to Advanced mode instead?

It seems something of a misnomer as an Easy mode toon has a significantly harder time levelling up and collecting gold in exchange for the stat boost. This actually makes the game harder.

Seems it's now used by micromanaging power builders to squeeze in more character power instead of an early game boost.

Perhaps:
Normal -> Standard Mode
Easy -> Advanced Mode
And Hardcore mode.
