1. I have observed since the server was supposed to have gotten "easier" that many mobs drop into hide when you click on them and get in devastating sneak damage no matter the initiative roll, distance and direction they were facing when you attacked them, or your spot/listen skills. My toon will be running at them and then just stops, waiting to be dropped by 2 death leeches in hell. The snakes in vera's do this as well. Is this simply HIPS?
2. I am starting a new magic based toon and can't get past lvl 6 due to ILR and general wimpiness. I started on "easy" and only managed to complete the tower quest. Fallen paladins and mobs of bandits outside trinity wipe the floor with me and I can't advance. Any suggestions?
3. I have also noticed a lot more petrification in hell. Is there a good defense against this?

1. This is HIPS I think. Get your spot as high as possible. Druid gives excellent buffs to spot and listen
2. What is the build plan? arcane caster, lock, druid or cleric. arcane caster: good crossbow (+2 + fire bolts). Defense: mage armor, displacement, mirror image, ghostly visage, prot from evil. Offensive spells: magic missile, orbs (if decent RTA), melf Lock: hit and run (glaive if they come close) druid: animal companion is meat shield, or use wild shape if they come close cleric: buff up and melee them to death

1 - this is HIPS. If you have (and if you don't it may be an idea to build one) a toon capable of making scrolls.... either living undeath (clerics) or stone/iron body (arcane) are excellent protections against sneak attacks. One of the first lessons taught me by other players when I started on this server is to have a toon to scribe scrolls for my other toons.
2 - another tactic, if other people are on the server, is to see if anyone wants or is willing to run these with you. NB make sure you are both carrying some sort of resurrection or raise dead (if you can't afford the rods or use scrolls), and in higher level areas carrying rods of freedom is not a bad idea either (for that pesky petrification) edited by Mythaluk on 2/1/2012

Well, WuWei's spot is 37. Can't get much higher. I guess I'm wondering why it was necessary to add this feat to mobs. Also, Fort is 36. I'm already level 30 so getting epic resilience and its prereqs or adding classes is not an option.
The plan for my new toon involves a lot of wiz levels early. If I have to buy a lot of scrolls or have help to get past level 6, perhaps the mobs are too hard, or the XP too low. The pallys in Holo's have regen and heals, which ensures I cannot kill them. I did mention ILR as preventing me from having anything over +1...I only get one attack per round. As far as having a toon to cast scrolls for others, this toon is supposed to be it, but can't get pat level 6. Thus the problem.... edited by virgo47 on 2/1/2012 edited by virgo47 on 2/1/2012

eh I've been killed by the same fallen pally too many times. Maybe it's time to just stop playing for a while.

I am not sure what you are doing when fighting them, but I was able to walk through that area with a sorcerer no problem. I used nothing other than what I bought at the shop with starting money, and what I found in the cloak tower.
My sorcerer is now on chapter 6. Playing solo and using nothing other than what I have gained playing though (as if a new player with no help at all). I did this testing the difficulty for casters.
What spells are you using when fighting?

Folks, keep in mind some things take strategy and patience
Yes some creatures have hips, some can dispel you, etc. The trick and the fun is figuring out how to best beat them. Also if you can't solo an area due to your current gear/level/build group up! Set up a time here on the forums or use the /s option to see if anyone online wants to join you

Had the same problem with a caster in Holo's: leveled him a bit further in troll cave. For Holo: use summons, grease, crossbow and fire bolts
Wuwei is lvl 30? Arcane or divine? Robe of true seeing gives +10 to spot. Living undeath gives crit immunity. Use AoE-spells: against leeches: undeath to death (learned it with experience: got killed enough by these punks :-).
Hips on critters is just an extra challenge that makes us think outside the box to overcome it. edited by battlechaser on 2/2/2012

same experience here
My druid caster is now at stonakor, having soloed most areas (except grimstead, daerlun (damn wynverns) and loth's tower). Since the spell update casters are much more viable. Only those damned beholders without them the overseers are no problem, with them i get pulped to death: just respawn and retry.

Take heart brother. Please don't be scared to ask for a hand. I have an ER1 toon that still has trouble with those damn snakes in Grimstead.
Furthermore, my best times in this game are when partied up with like-minded, foolhardy adventurers like yourself!
If you can give us an example of your current playing style there are a lot of cool folks that can fine tune your combat technique. Come to think of it I could use a bit of that myself.

Virgo,
If you are willing to post play times that your avaliable, I'll be happy to make a new mage and play with you. I would love to see what you are doing with your caster. Casters on RoT are terribly strong if you know how to go about playing them.
Get back to me with times mate, Besh

I appreciate the awesome offers of help! I have a few somewhat successful toons on RoT and am just having a little trouble getting this wiz off the ground with the new level restricted gear. Just been a little frustrated with this and my other two lvl 30's getting thru hell. The thing is I work rotating shifts and go to graduate school so my times on the server are sopradic and unpredictable. I'm in a great guild (Billy Kim) and the peeps there are helpful as well. I guess I have to come to terms that the server is not really soloable for someone like me, and will take the help I can get when I can Thanks for all the advice!
In the meantime, with more careful spell selection, better hit and run tactics, and some luck, I got the wiz toon to level 7 and now can use enough ILR gear to be viable for now. She'll be okay for now as I focus on getting my other toons thru hell and to ER1.

I think it's good that everything isn't soloable cause it encourages party play, which is awesome.
