Recent events have also drawn a number of questions from a small handful thinking that staff doesn't like guilds or individual players helping new players,.......this is ABSOLUTELY incorrect,....but we do think that some moderation should be shown when equipping new players or loading up the don bin.
helpful = giving them some gear in the max of +3/4 range and or explaining a few of the basic early chapters to them..or maybe even handing them 20-50k in gold to get started as opposed to kitting them out with gear.
unbalancing = handing them top lvl drop gear and then dragging them at warp speed all the way through the game, putting high end gear in donation box, handing new players several million in gold 30 minutes after they've made their first char.
We tried to stay away from having crap like having an ILR (item level Restriction) or the age old server rule of not being allowed to twink gear from one toon to another, but we also have to keep an eye on play balance and structure and is why we implemented our ILR system due to unbalancing behavior.
Having fresh new players being decked out in insane gear at lvl3 and pointing them to holo's island with an AB of 30+ and an AC in the 60's already does not really help the new player,...it robs them of the necessary gaming experience as they acquaint themselves to our world edited by bbloom on 3/25/2012

I'm going to throw in here as well and state that I COMPLETELY agree with Kama in this sentiment. Help them by giving them a little something to aid where they might be hurting (they can't hit? give them a better weapon. They get hit too much? give them some armor. They are completely lost? give them a bit of a tour), but don't ruin the experience by making the whole thing a breeze.

Remember guys, part of the fun is the storyline or finding an awesome item. We don't want anyone missing out on that.

What I like to do is to offer to "enchant" their basic weapon or armor. You can RP this and just forge a +2 onto the item or a little elemental dmg, etc. I usually do this in TTC near the campfire and play it all out there. If your a spell caster, you can give it an extra visual effect by casting spells when you "enchant" the item. This way, they get a better item, they are better able to handle something if they are getting their lunch handed to them, and you can still help them without twinking. Win-win.

And please folks, if you are helping them , let them read the convo's. You may already have seen them but they havent. Its really hard to get into a story when someone else is flipping through the pages.

Excellent point Joebob, a good rule of thumb is to let the first timers do the talking

As a new face to the server, I have greatly appreciated all of the help I have received at startup. I played NWN 2 years and years ago, so I am relearning the game. In addition, I'm not an expert with the DnD ruleset by any means. However, the joy of this game is figuring out what works and what does not.
I've quickly learned to pay attention to all of the dialoge. I'm starting to recognize familiar names everytime I log in....which is nice. Let me just say its daunting at times to try and master a complex games like this AND make entirely new friends at the same time.
Heck..it took me a few minutes how to remember to /tell and /say.
Anyway, the help is greatly appreciated and I agree with the overall point of not getting too powerful gear right to start.
