I was just sitting here and had remembered a time long ago where I had a bit of trouble with a player or two on this subject. This thought made me decide to write up a bit of general information about PvP combat. To most of you, a lot of this is pretty common knowledge, but I figured it would be best to cover all the bases.
First off, what is PvP?
Well, PvP stands for Player versus Player. This obviously is much different than the PvE (Player versus Enemy/Environment) or PvM (Player versus Monster) situations that most people are used to. Usually, you will find players to be a bit less inept than monsters or any other AI controlled enemy and the results of conflicts can be unpredictable.
Now that that's established, how does PvP work?
PvP happens any time one player has any sort of conflict with another player. Most people assume that PvP means only physical combat, but that is not true. Arguments and disagreements are also forms of PvP. The actual physical combat is only a small part.
But...wait a minute...the Rules page on the site says PvP isn't allowed!
While this used to be true, a lot has changed since the rules were wrote. I scripted up a tool that allows players to flag themselves as PvP ready. This will allow for in-character PvP matches anywhere in the world. Generally, it is not allowed to fight anyone outside the arena that is not flying this flag. Even so, you shouldn't be fighting someone if it's OOC (out of character) for your toon. For instance, you normally wouldn't see two Paladins duking it out in the town square. If you want to fight someone to test your build or for any other OOC reason, take it to the arena.
So what's this about a tool?
Good question. I wrote a RP/PvP/AFK toggler that every toon should have in its inventory. By using this tool, you can set a flag above your head that will allow you to show other players your current status. You can set yourself to AFK if you need to walk away for a few minutes (this will help keep people from talking to air). You can also use the tool to throw up an RP flag. This will allow people to see that you're into RPing your toon and set you apart from the people that prefer to just hack 'n' slash and level up their characters. Finally, there's the PvP option. This option tells people that you're up for RP and you're willing to delve into PvP at the drop of the hat.
Oh, so what you're saying is that no one can attack me outside of the arena if I'm not flying the PvP flag?
That's ALMOST true. While people normally shouldn't attack you for no reason, there are instances where you might find yourself lying in a pool of your own blood even if you're not flying the PvP flag. A good example is if you're calling someone out. If you're sitting there telling someone how worthless they are or how you could kill them in one hit, don't be surprised if they kill you. They are fully within their right to do so since YOU started the PvP with your words.
Oh, I see...just one more question...
Feel free to post any questions on this thread and I'll answer them to the best of my ability. In addition, I will edit the main post to contain your question as well. edited by Zeus on 1/22/2011
