Prestiege Class Enhancement - Eldrich Knight

See upcoming changes below in green.

Eldritch Knight

(PRESTIGE CLASS: This class is not available at character creation and must be unlocked by meeting special requirements, listed below.)

Studying the martial and arcane arts to equal degree, the eldritch knight is a versatile combatant who can cast a fireball on her foes or charge them with sword drawn. The eldritch knight takes pride in her ability to use the right technique for the job: spells against physically tough foes and force of arms against spellcasting enemies.

Eldritch knights split their time between physical training to become better soldiers and arcane study to learn more powerful spells. They tend to be driven individuals, because simultaneously perfecting their spellcasting and combat prowess requires immense time and effort.

THIS CLASS HAS 24 LEVELS.

Requirements:

Feats: Weapon Proficiency (Martial).

Spellcasting: Able to cast 3rd level arcane spells.

Class Features:

- Hit Die: d8

- Base Attack Bonus: High.

- High Saves: Fortitude.

- Weapon Proficiencies: None.

- Armor Proficiencies: None.

- Skill Points: 2 + Int modifier.

- Class Skills: Concentration, Craft Alchemy, Craft Armor, Craft Trap, Craft Weapon, Lore, Parry, Spellcraft, and Tumble.

- Bonus Feats: The eldritch knight gains Combat Casting, Quicken Spell, and Skill Focus (Concentration) at first level. You gain additional bonus feats at level 16, 18, 20, and 24.

- Arcane Spellcasting: At each level (except 1st level) an eldritch knight gains new spells per day, plus another effective casting level, as if he progressed in an arcane spellcasting class that he had prior to becoming an eldritch knight. If a character has multiple arcane spellcasting classes when becoming an eldritch knight, he must choose which arcane spellcasting class will benefit from all levels of eldritch knight.

The change to EK is a good one, and will make the base class much more powerful. Feats are a big choke point for hybrids, they basically never have enough.

One thing though that is really holding hybrids back is that you currently need to play them on easymode and ideally dump a whole lot of feats into your secondary stat as well. Fan introduced a nice secondary effect to bladesong-style way back when he changed the class: http://www.realmsoftrinity.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=2899&start=70

Bladesinger's blade song style now grants an AB bonus equals to the difference between the Int modifier and the Str/Dex modifer. This bonus is capped by half of the bladesinger level you have.

How about a feat that would give you the difference between either inteligence or charisma and dex/str. This is inherently balanced because you are missing out on damage dice from STR or AC from dex and have to spend a feat. Not to mention that bards already have the option with snowflake wardance and clerics have the option with intuitive attack/zen archery.

You can similarily cap it by a quarter of the BAB of the class, restrict it to high bab or a certain treshhold of class levels to prevent abuse, but there honestly isnt any combination that comes to mind that is inherently overpowered, as long as you require a level of sorc/wizard to take those feats.

A second Quality of life change would probably be removing the line of code that strips Tenser when you cast a spell. The idea was very cute in the beginning, but it is making playing a Gish very... un-fluid. If you did tenser as a on-off thing that prevents spellcasting, i'd much rather see it as some sort of mode like combat expertise.

Thanks for taking a look at hybrids though, seeing as how that is the only thing i play, i really apreciate it.

Sounds pretty powerful.

Would it also be a good idea to add tumble as a class skill and extend progression to 34?

I can add tumble as another class skill. I am leaving max levels in class at 24 due to all the additional work and time it will take to do that. There is a considerable amount of 2da work that would have to be done to get everything built out properly to do that.

Changes have been promoted to beta. Players who want to test the new EK features will need to download and extract this file to your hak folder before connecting to BETA.

Changes appear to have gone live.

Tried to build a pure caster Sorc15/EK16/Barb2/AS7, but encountered significant bugs:

1) Got a bonus selectable feat at EK1.
2) EK levels did not allow me to learn new spells, causing my sorcerer spellbook to be extremely limited. This is pretty major.
3) EK bonus feats seem to be restricted to fighter + wizard bonus feats, meaning no higher AQs or arcane purist feats were selectable for the EK bonus feats between 10-16. May be working as intended though to prevent pure casters taking EK.
4) Got heavy armor and tower shield proficiency at EK1

The changes went live based on the testing we conducted on Beta. We mainly tested Fighter / Wizard builds which by the stats were the most prevalent combo used with EK.

Feedback below:

1) Got a bonus selectable feat at EK1. - This is intentional, may have been missed in documentation update.

2) EK levels did not allow me to learn new spells, causing my sorcerer spellbook to be extremely limited. This is pretty major. - BUG, needs fixed.

3) EK bonus feats seem to be restricted to fighter + wizard bonus feats, meaning no higher AQs or arcane purist feats were selectable for the EK bonus feats between 10-16. May be working as intended though to prevent pure casters taking EK. - Intentional. The original 2da did not have hardly anything in it available and is far more robust with the fighter / arcane feats that were added as selectable.

4) Got heavy armor and tower shield proficiency at EK1 - This is a bug from us merging the fighter / wizard bonus feats tables.

Would it be possible to add AQ 4-9, Arcane Purist Feats, and Epic Mage armor to the EK bonus feats? It's otherwise very tricky to hit AQ9 on an EK.

Without another source of epic bonus caster feats, you will need to hit EK14, 16, or 18 at Char level 27 and take AQ1-2, pump 2 more EK, then take AQ4 at Char level 29. This leaves no room for purist feats.
